Position Summary
As a Senior Database Administrator (DBA) and member of the Engineering Operations team, the incumbent is responsible for the research, planning, development, implementation, monitoring, and administration of databases — primarily PostgreSQL and Oracle. The team is responsible for the optimization, security, integrity, efficiency, scheduling, maintenance, and documentation of the databases, and for establishing and enforcing written guidelines, rules, and standards. The Senior Database Administrator plays an instrumental role in the successful delivery of Webb Fontaine's products and reports directly to the Director of IT Infrastructure.
Key responsibilities
Design, implement, and document database architecture, replication, operating procedures, and
standards/conventions.
Keep all relevant documentation and credentials up to date.
Collaborate with other teams, parties, and partners to ensure tasks are scheduled and completed on time.
Create problem tickets and take the necessary actions to determine an appropriate fix for recurring or critical incidents.
Provide remote/on-call support for databases in production environments, particularly during critical, service-impacting incidents.
Ensure implementation and monitoring of backup, replication, performance improvement, and disaster recovery solutions.
Ensure efficient database administration, including installation, configuration, upgrading/patching, monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintenance of PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, and MS SQL Server databases.
Anticipate compatibility issues with operating systems, new functionality, and utilities.
Lead database/query tuning and performance efforts, data modeling, and schema design and review.
Ensure database and data integrity and security based on industry best practices.
Lead the automation and performance improvement of recurring tasks.
Evaluate and apply AI-driven tools and techniques (e.g., predictive monitoring, anomaly detection, automated query/index tuning) to optimize database operations and performance.
Explore and implement integrations using the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and similar frameworks to connect AI/LLM-based tools with database systems for automated monitoring, diagnostics, and operational tasks.
Participate in shifts and on-call rotations and respond to after-hours alerts.
Train other team members, particularly junior staff.
Contribute to maintaining high team morale and enthusiasm.
Perform other related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor, as requested and deemed necessary.
Qualifications
BS or MS in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
At least 5 years of relevant experience.
Prior experience leading a team of technical engineers.
Expertise in PostgreSQL, Oracle, and MySQL in a high-volume, high-impact transactional environment.
Experience with PostgreSQL in the cloud (AWS, AZURE, GCP)
In-depth knowledge of best practices relating to database security standards and replication.
Strong shell scripting and Linux system administration skills.
Demonstrated experience and knowledge of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning tools and techniques applied to database operations optimization (e.g., AI-based performance tuning, predictive capacity planning, intelligent alerting/anomaly detection).
Experience with the Model Context Protocol (MCP) or similar standards for connecting AI agents/LLMs to databases and operational tooling is a strong plus.
Ability to learn new technologies with minimal supervision.
Experience automating recurring tasks and standardizing processes.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Willingness to work extended hours when required.
Relevant certification in the area of expertise is a plus.
Fluency in English required; knowledge of French is a plus
